Given dates (all in the Common Era) are approximate and represent the upper and lower possible extremes of the person's lifetime.

Life dates: 1st half 11th century. (Kajiyama 1961 p. 366 [Kajiyama 1989 p. 496]: after Dharmottara, Vācaspati, before Ratnakīrti), a survey of the dating possibilities, as yet undecided, in Toru Funayama, Bubun to zentai, in: Tohō Gakuhō 62, 1990, pp. 607–635, n. 25. According to Hahn 2001 p. 3, Paṇḍita Aśoka is the author of a commentary on Ratnākaraśānti's Vidagdhavismāpana (ms. in Paris, Collection Sylvain Lévi Nr. 27) and therefore a younger contemporary of Ratnākaraśānti.
